For great planetary shots of Mars and other solar system objects the best place is the NSSDC photo gallery maintained by NASA. NSSDC |

One of the cool things I like to do in astronomy is watch for satellites. There are a ton of communication satellites whipping around the earth, and if you look in the right place at the right time, you can see them without any kind of telescope or binoculars. Have you ever been looking up at the sky at night and noticed a star slowly moving across the sky? That was a satellite. They only appear at a specific time, and very briefly. Fortunately for you, there are a plethora of prediction programs out there to tell you when and where to look. The first and still the best program for satellite watching is maintained by an astronomer. You don't have to download anything, it's all web-based. check it out: The Earth Satellite Ephemeris Service |

If you're a Palm geek like me, there is even a Palm-based program to predict satellite passes. You can take your palm right out into the field and watch! The author provides some data on satellites, but you can also input your own from NASA or wherever. Pocket Sat |

Here are some shots I took myself. The star trails I did with a Minolta SLR, the two of the moon I did with a Canon Powershot S110, which R0xx0Rz by the way. Click on the images for a larger version. You are free to use them as wallpaper or for fun personal use, but you may not use them for commercial (i.e. to make money) purposes without written permission, or represent them as your own. |
